How do I calculate my engagement rate quickly?
Use the free engagement rate calculator. Enter your followers (or reach or views) and the likes, comments, saves and shares on a post or a set of posts, and it gives you the rate. No login, nothing to connect.
What is the engagement rate formula?
There are three common versions. Use the same one every time so your numbers compare.
- By followers: (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100. The usual number brands ask for.
- By reach: (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ accounts reached × 100. Fairer for posts that travel beyond your followers.
- By views: interactions ÷ views × 100. Standard for TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts.
Worked example
You have 8,000 followers. A post gets 260 likes, 18 comments, 30 saves and 12 shares, which is 320 interactions.
320 ÷ 8,000 × 100 = 4.0% engagement by followers. Average 6 to 10 recent posts rather than judging one.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Typical ranges reported by industry studies (by followers, per post). They vary a lot, so treat them as a rough guide:
| Engagement rate | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Under 1% | Low. Common for large or older accounts. |
| 1% to 3% | Average to good for most accounts. |
| 3% to 6% | Strong. |
| Above 6% | Very high. Common for small, close-knit accounts. |
Smaller accounts usually have higher rates than big ones. A 2,000-follower account at 5% and a 500,000-follower account at 1% can both be healthy.
What is a good TikTok engagement rate?
TikTok is usually measured by views, because most views come from the For You feed, not followers. Typical ranges reported by industry studies put average TikTok engagement somewhere around 3% to 9% of views, with wide swings by niche. If you measure TikTok by followers instead, viral posts can show rates far above 100%, which is why views make a better base.
How can I improve my engagement rate?
- Ask for one specific action: “Save this for later”, “Which one, A or B?”.
- Reply to comments in the first hour. Conversations add comments and signal interest.
- Post formats that get saved and shared: checklists, carousels with steps, short how-tos.
- Clean up hashtags. A few relevant ones beat thirty generic ones. Tidy them with the hashtag cleaner.
- Do not buy followers. Inactive followers lower your rate on every post.
How to use your engagement rate with brands
Brands look at engagement rate next to follower count when choosing creators. Put your average rate, the formula you used and the date range in your media kit. Build one with the free media kit generator and read how to make a media kit.
Engagement on posts is half the story; clicks are the other half. A link in bio page with click analytics shows brands how many people actually tapped through. Biolinko tracks views, link clicks and click-through rate, free for 30 days of history.

Yes, in most formulas. They are strong signals because they take more effort than a like.
That is normal. Larger audiences include more casual followers. Watch the trend over months rather than comparing with when you were small.
Usually not. Views are the base you divide by for video, while engagement counts actions such as likes, comments, saves and shares.
